Today I decided to compare and contrast two of my favorite book series with my single most hated book series. I found some similarities between the good books, and the book that kills children's brain cells, but there were some significant differences in said similarities.
The books in question are The Mediator series, The Princess Diaries, and the Twilight series. Three guesses which one I hate.
Meg Cabot, author of both Mediator and Princess Diaries, is a best selling author for several series, not just one. Her writing is for adults, not adolescent girls who are still searching for Prince Charming, regardless of the fact that all the boys they've met are dogs. ("But he's out there somewhere!!!") Meg Cabot's series are purposefully bubbly, funny, cute, and witty. Stephanie Meyer's series is half dialogue, half description of Edward's "Adonis-like good looks". So, to contrast the two, I picked my two favorite Cabot series to battle against the evils of Twilight.
1. The heroines.
Bella
Bella is the utter anti-feminist. No matter what, she is completely desperate to please Edward. Everyone loves her, even though most of the time, she drones on about how dull she is. She's also probably a self-insertion Mary Sue, as Stephanie Meyers looks very similar to Bella. I would be a little more accepting of this, were Bella's life not utterly perfect. Really, Bella has no depth at all, and can never manage to do anything without getting one of the vampires to save her. Why the vampires and werewolves are all willing to help her is a mystery to me; the "evil" vampires might leave them alone if they let them EAT BELLA.
Suze
Suze, from The Mediator, can touch and talk to ghosts. She has a fondness for the color black, which few girls at her new school in California understand. She is constantly being thrown into danger, usually by her own overconfidence, but usually manages to get out on her own. Only sometimes is she saved, and she usually doesn't want the person to save her. (The exception being in the first book when her step brothers save her from the crushed school.) Suze is popular at her new school at first, because she saves a boy (who is popular) from the evil ghost of a vengeful ex. (no one but Suze knows this, of course.) Suze has usually had to deal with ghosts all by herself, and she's managed to not get herself killed for about fifteen years, even though her life was threatened by several angry ghosts. Suze loves Jesse very much, but when she is convinced he left her, she does not, as Bella did, collapse into an emotional wreck and DAI BECAZ ED NO LOVE HER!!!!!!!!!!111111111111 =( =( =(
No, Suze decides to try and get over it, even though she never gets the chance too. Wanna know why? Read the frigging books. Also, Suze didn't fall in love with Jesse right away. She thought he was hot, but she didn't fall for him until later, after they'd known each other for more than one conversation.
Mia
Mia, to put it bluntly, has no idea what the !@#$ she's doing. While it may be true that she's had three boys in love with her during this series, she's not loved by everyone. And if she is, many people are just sucking up to her since she's a princess. To be honest, though, Mia's life sucks more than Bella's or Suze's, so she's allowed to be a whiner, because her life really is pretty crappy. Not much to say about her; her romantic situation is pretty healthy for the most part, except for the whole neck thing, but she's admitted that she knows it's weird.
I'll write more of this in little doses.
